Book one: KINGDOM OF GIRLS by Karolin Kluppel

This book is a collection of photos done by Karolin in a small village Mawlynnoon in northeast India. This is a place where women have more right than men. Women say “yes” about everything including inheriting property and name. So this photographer took pictures of girls in this village. all the photographs do not seem like doing on purpose, (girls are not doing any pose) instead, it seems like Karolin just push the camera button and record the moment of what going on. By looking at the photos, it took me to that environment and know who they are, which this is one of my understanding of photography, is to capture the moment and record the subject who they are. All of her works in this book has environment element, it is not just the subject itself. Some are looking right at the camera, some are not, but they all reveal some stories behind and are very close to reality. She is a very good observer of life and detail. All she used as equipment are things from life. For example, a girl is holding a chicken and looking far away in front a wall, it just guides the viewer to ask questions like why is she holding a live chicken and what is she looking at. Also by what they wear can also demonstrate their situation personality and so on. Her work is just recording the reality of that moment and also very natural, it just seems like she was not there taking a picture but she presents what the village’s life was to us from that moment. If I want to replicate her work, I probably have to have a good relationship with these girls, because I want them to trust me and be natural in front of a camera.

Book two: PORTRAITS by Hellen van Meene
This book is also portraited, but very different from the first one I have read. First, all the model seems to pose on purposely and the place are picking intentionally seems like, because most of them are not just like a random place we can see daily, so does the cloth and everything. Her subject is also most girls but the teenager age, but it also has a boy. One thing about the photographer’s style is that the photos are using natural lights. But as for the overall feeling for the picture some just looks like a painting or a film because of the color contrast between the background and the cloth subject wears and also the tone is grayish. It just a very peaceful color tone where nothing pops out into our eyes. All the arranged elements like their pose, cloth, and environment give me a feeling of wonder and fantasy. We also can tell something just from looking at this portrait, like the personality of this person or what might go on with them, why are they doing that pose or wear that kind of cloth, this makes me curious about their story like what have they experienced before and makes who they are like presented in the photo. A little strange but in a good way of their appearance can really grab the viewer’s attention.

Book three: Disquiet by Amani Willett
This book is my favorite out of the three books I read. the subject is different but the one thing in common about photographer’s style is the all have a contrast between light and dark. Each photo has a source of light coming in and has a contrast with the dark side. I got the feeling of the movie. Some photos just like a story but some just a simply a subject like a tissue dropped on the floor or a newspaper on the muddy grass field. He also has some environmental portraits. I  really enjoy looking at photos that like how he used a large area of dark space and to makes the light part pop out to be the focus. And my first impression is that all photos are taking in a quiet place with only a source of light in a dark room, but the title of the book is disquiet. This makes me look closer and start thinking deeply. I start realizing that there is more beyond the image itself. The black and white photo continue to appear throughout the book which gives me a feeling of chaos, some people are holding guns, which echos the title of the book disquiet. I have read the article at the end of the book, and just like what I have discovered, the creator Amani Willett’s purpose is meant to present the underlying message from the photo. He doesn’t want the photo to convey the idea of what it appears to the viewer. Instead, he wants to show more and to invite viewers to guess what’s going on truly and make people start questioning and thinking. Again overall to me is just like a story. If I want to replicate it, I will make it a movie-feeling like and have good control of the light and contrast between light and dark space.
